Today is HR Professional Day and a chance to shine a light on the people who keep workplaces running smoothly and support them through change.

Why HR matters more than ever

HR professionals are the unsung superheroes of the workplace.

They carry the weight of organisational change, employee concerns and compliance demands. Burnout is real, yet day after day, they still show up for their people. They listen, they advocate, they guide, and they protect the culture of our workplaces – even when their own resources feel stretched thin.

From shaping culture to safeguarding compliance, HR teams bring far more than processes to the table. They are trusted advisers who help leaders navigate complex people issues, champion employee wellbeing and drive organisational performance.

With significant legislative shifts, like the Employment Rights Bill, on the horizon, their expertise is essential in keeping businesses compliant, agile, and ahead of change.

Today, let’s recognise the resilience, dedication, and heart of HR teams everywhere. Their commitment isn’t just to policies or processes – it’s to people.

Behind the scenes, our HR specialists deliver outstanding support to clients every single day, advising on everything from policy updates to complex employee relations cases.

Hear from the AdviserPlus team

We asked some of our HR professionals why they’re proud to work in HR and here is what they had to say:

What I love most about working in HR is being trusted with people’s stories. Helping colleagues feel heard, respected, and supported reminds me that HR isn’t just about policies, it’s about people and the impact we can have on them. – Rebecca Ward, HR Technical Consultant

What I love most about HR is being able to help others, have an influence, and assist with creating a positive working environment – we spend many hours at work and if I can make even a small but meaningful impact on someone’s experience, that’s what matters. – Jac Jones, HR Technical Associate

What I love about working in HR is to help… HR is fundamentally about People, their experiences, their concerns and their triumphs. To be able to support them, whether that’s coaching managers in their support of their people, or giving support and guidance to our internal People… it gets me out of bed in the morning! – Samantha Helsby, Technical HR Consultant

I am proud of all the unsung heroes within HR – the people who quietly and conscientiously get on with their jobs in the background, the ones you don’t notice or speak to until something goes wrong. A big thank you on HR Professional Day to our amazing payroll teams! – Anna Rebaudo, Technical HR Consultant

I love knowing what we do makes a difference, whether this is by supporting the business in eliminating risk, empowering managers to lead their team or helping them to support their team though training and development.

HR is not only about supporting managers, it’s great that we also have the opportunity to help employees, too, by ensuring they obtain the necessary support through any workplace issues, such as making sure they are heard through any grievance processes, and advising on external support as and when needed. – Kelly Armitage, Technical HR Consultant

I’m proud of continually learning in a HR role – to constantly be seeking new information and to be at the forefront of inclusion and creating safer spaces for people to work in.

To be able to champion causes such as LGBTQIA+ rights, Mental Health and Disability Awareness alongside worker’s rights and helping to support some big name clients means I have a very fulfilling role, day-in and day-out, which I can be proud of. – Emily Bennett, Technical HR Consultant

What I love about HR is helping people to build better working relationships. Whether it’s sorting out a disagreement, being there for someone going through a tough time, or helping them deal with challenges like poor health at work – I love being that person they can turn to.

It’s a great feeling knowing I’ve helped someone feel more at ease and confident in their job, while also giving their manager the tools and understanding to keep that support going. – Sarah Kerr, HR Technical Consultant

Working in HR offers such breadth and variety of learning, both in terms of technical knowledge, and more significantly for me, in understanding and supporting people. Work gives many people structure and self-esteem, and to help protect this and support people to see their value as individuals in work feels important and rewarding.

My day-to-day priorities might range from tasks that are technical, strategic, personal, or creative – all to be underpinned by parity and progress, which makes for meaningful days at work. – Sophie Hupfield, HR Business Partner

What I love about working in HR is creating a better understanding about people and how to support and build a positive working environment. Work is where people spend most of their week so ensuring they are safe, happy and able to be themselves is really important.

It’s nice to work with people for people and their best interest is always top of the agenda. I also love how much variety there is in HR and how even just in the ER space no day is ever the same. – Rebecca Fox, HR Technical Consultant

Thank you, everyone – and happy HR Professional Day!
