What makes one business stand out from another? How do we actually value a business in a world in which culture plays a big part in defining that value?

The latest episode in our HR Leadership Series explores these big questions and what they mean for people trying to effectively define their business goals.

In conversation with AdviserPlus CEO Nick Bradley, Lancaster University’s Dr Anthony Hesketh said: “Value is changing. The way that we value organisations is changing. We know that culture plays a fundamental role in that and yet actually it’s this ephemeral concept.”

He said that the latest research shows that as much as 80 per cent of a businesses value might be considered intangible, adding: “We can no longer articulate convincingly on a balance sheet what the total asset value of a business is.”

Dr Hesketh has been working with senior asset managers and leading CEOs and accounting giant EY to look into the role of culture in organisations.

He said that businesses all need to work out their own way of defining their culture and what matters to them. He added: “There are no magic variables. You determine the variables that matter to you.”
